"The Victorian concept of the home as a protective case for life was rooted in the idea of horror vacui—the fear of emptiness. Plush velvet interiors, filled with furniture, decorations, and curiosities gathered from every continent, were seen as an antidote to existential anxiety. The ideal bourgeois home was a miniature world enclosed within four walls, offering an escape from reality." Although the apartment in Warsaw’s Żoliborz district contains subtle references to this Victorian vision of the home as a sanctuary, Melerska and Pieczykolan’s design replaces the fear of emptiness with amor vacui—a love of space free from excess. Reduced to only the essential elements, the interior allows the senses to relax and provides a chance to breathe in the very heart of the city."(...)
